SUMMARY:Drops of Joy: Film Screening & Q&A
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with AlanaFeaturing a post-film Q&A with Cacau Rhoden hosted by Irene Caselli \nChildhood games are a part of our social\, intellectual and emotional formation. Through them we socialise\, define ourselves\, and internalise many of the cultural habits of adult life. We all played in our childhood\, and were free and happy while playing. But do we still keep this joyful spirit and playful culture alive within us? Would the child we once were be proud of the adult we became? Drops of Joy is a manifesto on the importance of sustaining the playful spirit that arises in childhood but which our system encourages to abandon in our adult life. \nWe hope you will join us for this special film screening\, followed by a short Q&A hosted by Irene Caselli with the film’s director Cacau Rhoden. \nFilm length: approx 80 minutes | Q&A: approx 30 minutes \nYou can watch a recording of the full Q&A below.  \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nPARTNERS \n\n\n\nAlana is a socio-environmental impact organisation that promotes children’s rights to integral development and fosters new forms of well being. After working for a decade as a foreign correspondent in Latin America\, in 2019 she became the world’s only First 1\,000 Days correspondent for The Correspondent\, a transnational member-funded journalism site. When The Correspondent shut down in December 2020\, she launched her own platform. Irene has been awarded fellowships by the IWMF\, the European Journalism Centre and the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma. She speaks six languages\, and is now learning Greek. SUMMARY:If These Walls Could Talk: Mural Painting
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with The Lawrence HouseInspired by the stories of children and young people in The Lawrence House\, South Africa. \n\n\n\nThis participatory storytelling and mural development event incorporates the stories and expressions of children and young people living in the Lawrence House\, South Africa.  \n\n\n\nArtists held a storytelling and visualisation workshop with 15-20 young people to develop the mural concept and paint this on the premises of the House. The storytelling workshop focused on children’s place in society and representation of their rights in a public domain. A separate workshop was held\, where children had the opportunity to use acrylic paints and canvas to present their own stories\, however they choose.  \n\n\n\nThe stories that emerged were translated into a mural\, painted by a creative collective. You can now view the filmed content documenting this process below\, accompanied by a time-lapse video. \n \n\n\n\n\nThe Process – from workshop to mural\n\n\n\n\nA note from the creatives: \n\n\n\nIf These Walls Could Talk: Together Everyone Achieves More \n\n\n\nThis mural tries to fold together ideas on how adults see children and young people\, how children and young people see themselves\, and how they would like to be seen by the world. \n\n\n\nAdults often think of young people as passive recipients of ‘adult culture’ or passive not-yet-adults – as can be seen in the far right of the mural in which a young girl is playing with figurines. \n\n\n\nIn actuality\, young people are fighting these social constructions imposed upon them by others\, fighting for their voices to be heard and developing through their own experiences and growth\, as can be seen in the remainder of the mural. The mural attempts to highlight the battles and positionality that children and young people face. \n \n\nMural Time-lapse – from start to finish\n\n\n\n\nYou can sign up HERE for updates. \n\n\n\n\n\nPARTNERS \n\n\n\nThe Lawrence House is a child and youth care centre registered to accommodate up to 25 children and youth who have been found in need of care. Ever since its inception\, The Lawrence House has dedicated its programmes and interventions to separated refugee children and unaccompanied foreign minors. The Lawrence House strongly believes that children and young people with migratory experiences who have been placed in alternative care have particular care and developmental needs\, which can only be addressed successfully within a framework of understanding migration\, integration in the South African context\, and trauma. The Lawrence House also has a comprehensive approach to the young person which means to analyse aspects of the legal stay in the country as well as explore family reunification on a broader spectrum\, not just locally but to actively work towards international reunification where deemed in the best interest of the child. \n\n\n\n\n\nCREATIVES \n\n\n\nNabeel Petersen considers himself to be a mixed martian (or other interplanetary) artist\, of sorts\, passionate about the fertile spaces between people\, disciplines\, places\, spaces\, approaches\, expression and life/nature. SUMMARY:In My Feelings About Climate Change: A Workshop on Climate Grief
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with SustyVibesFacilitated by Ama Josephine Budge \nHow do we talk about climate grief\, anxiety\, anger and mourning – in intersectional and collective ways – to better prepare all generations\, as we reckon with ecological breakdown and transformation? This workshop is one small attempt.  \nFollowing part one – In My Feelings About Climate Change: In Conversation – join us for part two:  In My Feelings About Climate Change: A Workshop\, an intimate space to discuss tactics and tools for navigating climate grief led by pleasure activist\, artist and science fiction writer Ama Josephine Budge. \nClimate change is triggering and exacerbating mental health conditions all over the world\, disproportionately affecting young people and those who face other intersections of oppression and anxiety.  \nLeading on from the key themes of the panel discussion\, this 90 minute workshop’s key objective is to co-create a ‘brave’ and safer space\, where participants can share and reflect on complex feelings that arise from a growing awareness of our changing climate. Feelings such as anxiety\, grief\, despair\, guilt\, fear\, powerlessness and denial will all be touched on; thinking through how and where grief sits in our bodies through breathing exercises; and locating the tools we already have to face social\, political and ecological anxiety and change.  \nCollectively\, we will affirm the much needed reminder: that everyone is worthy of receiving care and support\, and that we all have something to give and share as we approach climate change together. We hope you will join us. \nPlease note: tickets are limited due to the nature of this workshop. Please only reserve a ticket if you can definitely attend. \n\n\n\nPARTNERS \n\n\n\nSustyVibes is a youth-led organisation based in Nigeria that provides a platform for young people to drive sustainable development projects in their communities\, making sustainability actionable and relatable for children and young people. \n\n\n\n\n\nHOST \n\n\n\nAma Josephine Budge is a pleasure activist\, artist and researcher whose work navigates intimate explorations of race\, art\, ecology and feminism\, working to activate movements that catalyse human rights\, environmental evolutions and troublesomely queered identities. Ama is a PhD candidate in Psychosocial Studies with Dr Gail Lewis at Birkbeck. Her research takes a queer\, decolonial approach to challenging climate colonialism\, with a particular focus on inherently environmentalist pleasure practices in Ghana and across the Black diaspora. Ama is the 2020/21 Keith Haring Fellow in Art and Activism with BARD College. \n\n\n\n\n\nTIME ZONES \n\n\n\nPlease note that we’re using Central European Time (CET) for all events during the festival. SUMMARY:In My Feelings About Climate Change: In Conversation
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with SustyVibesFeaturing Clover Hogan\, Elizabeth Wathuti and Britt Wray\, PhD\, in conversation with Jennifer Uchendu \nHow do we normalise spaces for conversations about climate emotions? \nClimate change is triggering and amplifying mental health problems in people all over the world. Children and young people\, in particular\, are disproportionately affected. With daily saturation of media and scientific reports on human-induced climate change becoming the norm\, grim images and predictions of an uninhabitable planet have taken centre stage. \nEco-anxiety has been referred to as chronic fear of ecological doom\, encompassing feelings of guilt\, anxiety and overwhelm about the state of the planet. Eco-anxiety is also a perfectly normal response; the realities and complexities of a changing climate are understandably difficult to grapple with.  \nSo how do we equip children and young people who experience eco-anxiety with the tools and support they urgently need to guide them through these psychological responses\, and empower them in their climate action? \nSustyVibes founder Jennifer Uchendu was joined by young climate activists Clover Hogan\, Elizabeth Wathuti and researcher Britt Wray\, PhD\, to share their own experiences and address how to navigate eco-anxiety in children and young people. This panel discussion was part one of our two-part collaboration with SustyVibes. Find out about part two  – In My Feelings About Climate Change: An Intimate Workshop on Climate Grief\, facilitated by pleasure activist Ama Josephine Budge. \nYou can watch a recording of the full panel discussion below. \n \n\n\n\nPARTNERS \n\n\n\nSustyVibes is a youth-led organisation based in Nigeria that provides a platform for young people to drive sustainable development projects in their communities\, making sustainability actionable and relatable for children and young people. \n\n\n\n\n\nHOST \n\n\n\nJennifer Uchendu is a sustainability communicator\, analyst and founder of SustyVibes – a social enterprise making sustainability actionable for young people in Nigeria. Force of Nature is a youth non-profit mobilising mindsets for climate action. Through virtual programmes\, they empower young people in 50+ countries to cultivate mindsets of agency\, purpose and resilience; and work with decision-makers across business\, policy and civil society to drive intergenerational solutions. \n\n\n\nElizabeth Wathuti is a passionate environmentalist and climate activist from Kenya and the founder of Green Generation Initiative and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Community development. She is currently the Head of Campaigns and Daima Coalition for green spaces protection Coordinator at Wangari Maathai Foundation.  \n\n\n\nBritt Wray\, PhD\, is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Human and Planetary Health at Stanford University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. SUMMARY:More Than Objects: Interactive Illustrations
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n\n\nWith Miriam SugranyesFeaturing everyday objects turned into illustrated narratives \n\n\n\nHow often do we pause to really take in our surroundings? Which objects lie all around us? What kinds of things do we look at everyday that we might start to see differently? A sink\, ripened fruit\, a lamp\, a doorway\, clothing or a piece of furniture? \n\n\n\nAs we open The Rights Studio Festival\, from 1st April and across the whole month\, we invite you to look at the objects around you – whatever they may be – through a different lens. Capture these objects with your phone or camera and share a photo with us. Each week of the festival\, our Art Director Miriam Sugranyes will then reimagine these objects into illustrations that tell the narrative of children’s rights. \n\n\n\nTo get involved: please send a photo of an object to us HERE. You can send as many as you like throughout April. \n\n\n\nWe can’t wait to get creative with you!  \n\n\n\nYou can sign up HERE for updates. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nMore Than Objects Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:More Than Noise: Interactive Audio
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n\n\nWith Mel Uye-ParkerFeaturing everyday sounds turned into live music \n\n\n\nWhat happens when we stop and listen to all the sounds that make up our everyday lives? \n\n\n\nThe rumble of a train\, swift typing on a keyboard\, blaring sirens\, snippets of conversation\, laughter\, rain beating against the window\, a baby crying\, or the sizzle of oil in a pan? Could we hear these sounds differently? Could we turn them into something else? \n\n\n\nFrom 1st April and across the whole month\, we will invite you to share snippets of your everyday sounds – whatever they may be – by uploading short audio recordings. These can be recorded on a phone or any device with audio-recording capabilities. \n\n\n\nAt the end of the Rights Studio Festival\, musician Mel Uye-Parker\, will host a live music session and transform your crowdsourced sounds into audio magic in real-time for Collective Vibrations. \n\n\n\nWe want to ask questions about how we can listen differently – and how we can listen better – through collective creative explorations. We hope you’ll join us! \n\n\n\nTo upload your sound snippets\, please click HERE. \n\n\n\nYou can sign up for updates here. \n\n\n\n\n\n
